About the participant

Tom on his bikeTom Bottomley is a relatively normal chartered accountant from Leeds in West Yorkshire. After many years sitting at a desk going square-eyed from his computer screen, he took time off work to raise as much money for charity as possible. The adventure began with 9 friends and the not undaunting challenge to break the Guinness World Record for the highest altitude formal dinner party ever. This was achieved on 3rd May 2004 on Lhakpa Ri, near Everest in Tibet at an altitude of 6,805 metres.

Following the success and enormous media attention that expedition gained (including numerous newspaper articles and live TV and radio interviews), Iceland to Africa on a bike is Tom's next fund-raising adventure.

Objectives:

Having raised (as a group) over £30,000 for charity on the previous expedition, the objective is to do it all again! Tom's personal target on this solo expedition is to raise at least £5,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, provider of terminal care for cancer patients in the UK. In order to do this, your help is needed. In particular, corporate support is much needed since Tom's friends and family are rapidly running out of cash and are no doubt beginning to despair of his ever returning to normal life!
